Ξεκίνησε η περίοδος του κυνηγιού… μαγισσών

Η πρόσφατη αντιρωσική εκστρατεία αλλά και οι καταγγελίες σεξουαλικής κακοποίησης λαμβάνουν χαρακτηριστικά υστερίας στις ΗΠΑ. Την ίδια υστερία με την οποία κάποιοι προσπάθησαν να αντιμετωπίσουν τις οικονομικές κρίσεις του Μεσαίωνα καίγοντας… μάγισσες.

«Τι κάνουμε τις μάγισσες;», ρωτούσε ο ιππότης των Μόντι Πάιθον στην ταινία «Το αδελφάτο των Ιπποτών της Ελεεινής Τραπέζης». «Τις καίμε», απαντούσε το πλήθος.

«Και τι άλλο καίγεται;», ρωτούσε ο ιππότης, για να πάρει την απάντηση: «Τα ξύλα». Το συμπέρασμα ήταν απλό: Αφού οι μάγισσες καίγονται, είναι φτιαγμένες από ξύλο, το οποίο επιπλέει στο νερό όπως οι πάπιες.

Άρα αν μια γυναίκα ζυγίζει όσο μια πάπια είναι μάγισσα. Οι χωρικοί λοιπόν, έβαλαν μια γυναίκα στη ζυγαριά, η οποία έδειξε ότι ζυγίζει όσο μια πάπια. Και ύστερα… την έκαψαν.

Η λογική δεν ήταν ποτέ το δυνατό σημείο του ανθρώπου (ούτε των Μόντι Πάιθον) στις περιόδους που ξεκινούσε το λεγόμενο κυνήγι των μαγισσών. Δυστυχώς, αρκετοί ιστορικοί και οικονομολόγοι υποστηρίζουν σήμερα ότι η ανθρωπότητα ίσως εισέρχεται και πάλι σε μια τέτοια περίοδο παραλογισμού.

Και δεν αναφέρονται στις αληθινές θανατώσεις γυναικών, που σημειώνονται ακόμη στη (σύμμαχο) Σαουδική Αραβία ή στην υποσαχάρια Αφρική, αλλά σε ένα συμβολικό κυνήγι μαγισσών, που ξεκινά από τις ΗΠΑ και απειλεί να επεκταθεί σε ολόκληρο τον πλανήτη.

Αρκεί να παρακολουθήσεις για λίγα λεπτά το δελτίο ειδήσεων ενός αμερικανικού τηλεοπτικού δικτύου για να εντοπίσεις σύγχρονους κυνηγούς και μάγισσες. Σχεδόν ό,τι πηγαίνει στραβά στον κόσμο –από την εκλογή του Τραμπ μέχρι τα δημοψηφίσματα της Καταλονίας και του Brexit– αποδίδεται σε παρέμβαση Ρώσων πρακτόρων.

Τα υπόλοιπα θέματα της ειδησεογραφίας καλύπτονται συνήθως από καταγγελίες γυναικών για σεξουαλική παρενόχληση που υπέστησαν από πολιτικούς ή αστέρες του Χόλιγουντ.

Τις τελευταίες ημέρες μάλιστα το κύμα καταγγελιών πήρε χαρακτηριστικά τσουνάμι, χωρίς κανένας να διασταυρώνει πλέον τις σχετικές πληροφορίες. Η αρθρογράφος Εμιλι Λίντιν έγραφε πρόσφατα ότι δεν την απασχολεί καθόλου «αν ορισμένοι αθώοι άντρες χάσουν τη δουλειά τους από ψευδείς καταγγελίες σεξουαλικής παρενόχλησης».

Μια ελπιδοφόρα εκστρατεία, λοιπόν, ενάντια στον βαθιά ριζωμένο σεξισμό και τις καταπιεστικές σχέσεις εξουσίας στη βιομηχανία του θεάματος και τους διαδρόμους της Ουάσινγκτον μετατρέπεται σε ένα υστερικό κυνήγι μαγισσών που τρέφει τα πιο αντιδραστικά και πουριτανικά ένστικτα της αμερικανικής κοινωνίας.

Σε πρόσφατο άρθρο του στους New York Times ο συγγραφέας Στέφεν Μαρτς έγραφε ότι οι άντρες (στο σύνολό τους) χαρακτηρίζονται από την «γκροτέσκα σεξουαλικότητά τους» και καθοδηγούνται από τη «χυδαία και επικίνδυνη φύση της ανδρικής λίμπιντο».

Ο ίδιος μάλιστα έφερνε ως παράδειγμα ηθικού άνδρα τον ελληνικής καταγωγής θεολόγο των πρωτοχριστιανικών χρόνων Ωριγένη Αδαμάντιο, ο οποίος αυτοενουχίστηκε ακολουθώντας κυριολεκτικά την εντολή του Ιησού «εἰσὶν εὐνοῦχοι οἵτινες εὐνούχισαν ἑαυτοὺς διὰ τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν».

Κανένας βέβαια από τους νεοαντιδραστικούς κυνηγούς της σεξουαλικής παρενόχλησης δεν αναφέρεται στα οικονομικά, πολιτικά και κοινωνικά αίτια που διαιωνίζουν την πραγματική καταπίεση των γυναικών και την εργασιακή, αλλά και σεξουαλική εκμετάλλευσή τους. Συνήθως, μάλιστα, οι ίδιοι άνθρωποι στηρίζουν φανατικά τις παραγωγικές σχέσεις πάνω στις οποίες οικοδομήθηκε η πατριαρχία.

Το Χόλιγουντ γνώρισε παρόμοια προβλήματα στη Μεγάλη Υφεση της δεκαετίας του ’30, όταν επιβλήθηκε ο πουριτανικός «κώδικας συμπεριφοράς για τις κινηματογραφικές παραγωγές».

Το οικονομικό κατεστημένο και τα media, ανήσυχα για τον κοινωνικό αναβρασμό, που λάμβανε ριζοσπαστικά χαρακτηριστικά, απέδιδαν όλα τα προβλήματα της κοινωνίας στην «ελευθεριότητα» που επικρατούσε στις ΗΠΑ με επίκεντρο το Χόλιγουντ. Το σκεπτικό δεν διέφερε και πολύ από το πρότυπο του «ηθικού εξαγνισμού» που επικαλέστηκε ο Χίτλερ για να συνθλίψει την καλλιτεχνική και πνευματική ζωή της δημοκρατίας της Βαϊμάρης.

Στις συνθήκες τις κρίσης, οι ελίτ κατάφερναν να μετατρέψουν την ταξική οργή της κοινωνίας σε μαζική υστερία απέναντι σε ανύπαρκτους εχθρούς.

Σύμφωνα με αρκετούς ιστορικούς, αυτό ακριβώς συνέβαινε και στο πραγματικό κυνήγι μαγισσών του Μεσαίωνα. Η Αμερικανίδα οικονομολόγος Εμιλι Οστερ συνδέει το κάψιμο «μαγισσών» του Μεσαίωνα με εξωγενή οικονομικά σοκ που προκαλούσαν ραγδαία επιδείνωση του βιοτικού επιπέδου σε μεγάλα τμήματα του πληθυσμού.

Συγκεκριμένα η λεγόμενη «μικρή εποχή των παγετώνων», δηλαδή η αισθητή πτώση της θερμοκρασίας και η συνακόλουθη μείωση της γεωργικής παραγωγής από τα μέσα του 13ου αιώνα, συμπίπτει με κλιμάκωση των εκτελέσεων ανθρώπων με την κατηγορία της μαγείας, που έφτασε το ένα εκατομμύριο θύματα.

Σύμφωνα με τους ιστορικούς Πολ Μπόγερ και Στέφεν Νίσενμπαουμ, οικονομικοί ήταν οι λόγοι που τροφοδότησαν και την περίφημη δίκη των «μαγισσών» του Σάλεμ στις ΗΠΑ. Συγκεκριμένα η σύγκρουση της παλαιάς γεωργικής παραγωγής με τον ανερχόμενο εμπορικό καπιταλισμό, αλλά και η ακύρωση τίτλων ιδιοκτησίας γης που προκάλεσε απότομη ανακατανομή πλούτου αποτέλεσαν την οικονομική βάση πάνω στην οποία στήθηκε η μαζική υστερία.

Στους επόμενους αιώνες οι κυκλικές κρίσεις του καπιταλισμού έδωσαν πολλές φορές αφορμές για τη μετατροπή της οργής σε κυνήγι μαγισσών. Πριν από μερικούς μήνες, μάλιστα, ο Economist υποστήριζε ότι η αδυσώπητη σύγκρουση των αμερικανικών προεδρικών εκλογών ίσως να εμπεριείχε ψήγματα ενός σύγχρονου κυνηγιού μαγισσών όπου κάθε πλευρά απέδιδε στον αντίπαλο αβάσιμες και συχνά παράλογες κατηγορίες.

Το κυνήγι λοιπόν, ξεκίνησε και ο σώζων εαυτόν σωθήτω.
