The
new energy battlefield is a fact
“The
United States should do 'whatever it takes' to maintain control over
Arctic natural resources, counterbalancing Russia and China,
America's geopolitical rivals, American military analyst Colonel
David Hunt stressed. The Arctic natural reserves amount to nearly
one-quarter of the world's undiscovered oil and gas resources. It is
expected that the US will extract almost 27 billion barrels of oil
and 132 trillion cubic feet of natural gas from the Arctic shelf.”
“According
to the colonel, 'he who hesitates is lost': failure to act
immediately may cost the United States in terms of its long-term
energy security. Washington risks becoming again dependent on
imported oil, losing its global competitive advantages and
leadership, he emphasized.”
“...
Russia is increasing its exploration activity in the Arctic region,
at the same time expanding its naval and transportation fleet. And it
is most likely that Russia will maintain its position as a 'dominant
player' in Arctic energy development in forthcoming years, the NPC
report stated.”
“Colonel
David Hunt underscored that Moscow has beefed up its military
presence in the Arctic's northwest Murmansk region, and expanded its
new radar and guidance system capabilities in order to maintain
control over the region and patrol its waters. Meanwhile, despite its
lack of Arctic territory, Beijing has jumped at the chance to invest
more in Arctic exploration, infrastructural projects, and energy
development.”
