Mad Max: η επιστροφή του Ρίγκαν

Ο ελληνικής καταγωγής σκηνοθέτης των Mad Max χώρεσε σε μια ιστορία την κρίση του καπιταλισμού και του πετρελαίου, τη γέννηση του νεοφιλελευθερισμού και την επιστροφή του νεο-συντηρητισμού. Ενδεχομένως μάλιστα να μην το κατάλαβε καν.

Οι ουρές στα βενζινάδικα μεγάλωναν μέρα με τη μέρα και μαζί τους γιγαντωνόταν η αγανάκτηση. Οι καβγάδες για μερικά λίτρα καυσίμων αποτελούσαν πλέον καθημερινό φαινόμενο ενώ σύντομα έκαναν την εμφάνισή τους και οι πρώτες συμμορίες, που έκλεβαν βενζίνη από παρκαρισμένα αυτοκίνητα. Ο Τζορτζ Μίλερ δεν θα ξεχάσει ποτέ αυτές τις εικόνες.

Παιδί Ελλήνων μεταναστών από τα Κύθηρα (ο πατέρας του, ο Δημήτρης Μηλιώτης, άλλαξε το επώνυμό του σε Μίλερ όταν έφτασε στην Αυστραλία) πίστευε ότι είχε αφήσει πίσω του την ανέχεια των Βαλκανίων και θα ζούσε το αυστραλιανό όνειρο. Ηταν ίσως ένα κακέκτυπο του αμερικανικού, αλλά ήταν σίγουρα πολύ καλύτερο απ’ ό,τι είχε να προσφέρει η νοτιανατολική Ευρώπη εκείνη την εποχή.

Και ύστερα ήρθε η πετρελαϊκή κρίση του 1973. Οι πετρελαιοπαραγωγές χώρες του ΟΠΕΚ αποφάσισαν να περιορίσουν δραστικά την παραγωγή και να χρησιμοποιήσουν τον «μαύρο χρυσό» σαν μέσο πίεσης απέναντι στις πολεμικές κινήσεις του Ισραήλ. Οι ελλείψεις έγιναν σύντομα αισθητές στα πρατήρια καυσίμων όλου του κόσμου και οι μετακινήσεις με Ι.Χ. αυτοκίνητα έπρεπε να περιοριστούν.

Στην πραγματικότητα αυτό που κατέρρεε μπροστά στα μάτια του Μίλερ ήταν το μικροαστικό όνειρο της απόκτησης ενός αυτοκινήτου, πάνω στο οποίο είχε στηριχθεί μεγάλο τμήμα της εκρηκτικής μεταπολεμικής ανάπτυξης. Η πετρελαϊκή κρίση ήρθε απλώς σαν καταλύτης για να κάνει εμφανή τη δομική κρίση των δυτικών οικονομιών που αδυνατούσαν να πετύχουν τους ρυθμούς ανάπτυξης που είχαν ανάγκη για να επιβιώσουν. Η παγκόσμια οικονομική αρχιτεκτονική, όπως είχε δομηθεί με τη συμφωνία του Μπρέτον Γουντς μετά το B΄ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο, κατέρρεε συμπαρασύροντας και το ψεύτικο όραμα της διαρκούς ανάπτυξης.

Αυτά τα προμηνύματα ενός δυστοπικού μέλλοντος θα κατέγραφε λίγα χρόνια αργότερα στην ταινία του Mad Max, o Τζορτζ Μίλερ. Στο μυαλό του οι πιτσιρικάδες που έκλεβαν βενζίνη μετατράπηκαν σε συμμορίες που λυμαίνονταν ολόκληρο τον πλανήτη, ενώ οι αντιπαραθέσεις έξω από τα βενζινάδικα πήραν τη μορφή ολοκληρωτικών πολέμων για τον έλεγχο των αποθεμάτων ενέργειας.

Δεν ήταν βέβαια μόνο η πετρελαϊκή κρίση που βοήθησε τον γιο του «Δημήτρη από τα Κύθηρα» να στήσει ίσως το πιο επιτυχημένο b-movie στην ιστορία του κινηματογράφου. Πριν αφιερωθεί στην έβδομη τέχνη εργαζόταν ως γιατρός στα επείγοντα περιστατικά ενός νοσοκομείου του Σίδνεϊ και καθημερινά ερχόταν σε επαφή με φρικιαστικές εικόνες τραυματιών από αυτοκινητικά ατυχήματα.

Στην επαγγελματική του ζωή, λοιπόν, έπρεπε να περιθάλπει όσους θυσιάζονταν στον θεό της ταχύτητας και στην καθημερινότητά του παρατηρούσε αυτούς που δεν είχαν βενζίνη να γεμίσουν τα ρεζερβουάρ τους.

Το Mad Max θεωρείται ακόμη και σήμερα ως μια από τις δημοφιλέστερες δυστοπικές ταινίες όλων των εποχών. Παρά το γεγονός μάλιστα ότι από πλευράς ποιότητας κατατάσσεται στα «σκουπίδια» του παγκόσμιου κινηματογράφου, αρκετοί ερευνητές επιχείρησαν να αντλήσουν ανθρωπολογικά και πολιτικά συμπεράσματα με τον ίδιο τρόπο που θα το έκαναν και με κάποιο (δυστοπικό) αριστούργημα – π.χ το Metropolis του Φριτς Λανγκ.

Η τεράστια απήχηση που γνώρισε η ταινία στο αμερικανικό κοινό συνδέθηκε άμεσα με τον νέο συντηρητισμό, τον εθνικισμό αλλά και τον σοβινισμό που θα έφερνε στην πολιτική ζωή της χώρας ο νεοφιλελεύθερος Ρόναλντ Ρίγκαν. Η κουλτούρα του μοναχικού καουμπόι, ο οποίος θριαμβεύει σαν εκδικητής, εκεί όπου έχει αποτύχει το προοδευτικό (Liberal) μοντέλο διακυβέρνησης, ταυτίζεται με την εικόνα που κομίζει και ο Ρίγκαν – πρώτα σαν αποτυχημένος ηθοποιός γουέστερν και στη συνέχεια σαν πλανητάρχης.

Οι κακοί του Mad Max δανείζονται στοιχεία από τους Ινδιάνους, τους οποίους κατατρόπωνε πάντα το καλό ιππικό. Μόνο που αυτή τη φορά ντύνονται και συμπεριφέρονται με τους όρους της πανκ κουλτούρας της δεκαετίας του ‘70 και του ’80 ή της κουλτούρας των μαύρων. Η Αμερική επιστρέφει στον πολιτισμό της άγριας Δύσης και ο λευκός εργάτης καλείται από το σύστημα να αντιμετωπίζει σαν αιτία όλων των δεινών του το προοδευτικό πνεύμα της δεκαετίας του ‘60 αλλά και τον μαύρο πληθυσμό που διεκδικεί μια θέση στην αγορά εργασίας.

Η πολιτική του Ρίγκαν στο εσωτερικό αλλά και το εξωτερικό των ΗΠΑ έρχεται να αντιμετωπίσει τα ίδια προβλήματα που υποτίθεται αντιμετωπίζει και ο ήρωας της ταινίας: η ηθική παρακμή και οι ελλείψεις φυσικών πόρων οδηγούν σε ανομία και χάος. Η λύση είναι πάντα η επιβολή του νόμου και της τάξης στο εσωτερικό και μερικοί επιθετικοί πόλεμοι για τον έλεγχο ενεργειακών κοιτασμάτων στο εξωτερικό.

Η τέταρτη παραγωγή του Mad Max έρχεται σε μια εποχή που αποτελεί το αντεστραμμένο είδωλο της πετρε­λαϊκής κρίσης του 1973. Χώρες όπως η Σαουδική Αραβία, που είχαν πρωτοστατήσει τότε στον ενεργειακό πόλεμο του ΟΠΕΚ, σήμερα συνεργάζονται με τις ΗΠΑ ρίχνοντας στην αγορά τεράστιες ποσότητες πετρελαίου με στόχο να πλήξουν τις οικονομίες της Ρωσίας, του Ιράν ή της Βενεζουέλας. Το μοτίβο της δομικής κρίσης του καπιταλισμού παραμένει το ίδιο ύστερα από σχεδόν τέσσερις δεκαετίες και ένας νέος συντηρητισμός, α λα Ρίγκαν, είναι πάντα στη μόδα.
