UN: 50,000 flee Burundi, fearing violence ahead of elections

More than 50,000 Burundians have fled to neighboring countries, fearing violence ahead of the June 26 elections, according to the UN refugee agency. A majority of the refugees are women and children, including a large number of unaccompanied children, AP quoted Adrian Edwards, a UN High Commission for Refugees spokesman, as saying Friday.”

Rwanda is hosting 25,000 refugees, followed by Tanzania with 18,000 and Congo with 8,000.”

The refugees said they are fleeing Burundi because of harassment and intimidation. At least 13 people have died and 216 wounded in nearly two weeks of protests in Burundi against President Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid to seek a third term in office.”
