On the
occasion of his new book, "The German Poison", the French MEP, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, discusses
comprehensively with Stelios Kouloglou. He refers to the consequences
of the absurd claims of a country like Germany against a country
suffering from the ills of the debt crisis and social misery. At the
same time, does not hide his anger for Berlin's tactics and in
particular for the behaviour of Wolfgang Schäuble to the government
of Alexis Tsipras.
Referring
specifically to Schäuble, the French MEP describes him as "brazen",
sketching the portrait of a man who is possessed by gloat. "And
Mr. Schäuble said: 'Let's see how Tsipras will tell the Greeks that
he didn't kept his word.' They enjoy the idea of a leader humiliated
in front of his people. But he says the same for France. Can you
imagine such an audacity? He said that he would like the Germans to
force France, but they can't, and this because of democracy. Can you
realize the brutality of this phrase? These people are mad, they are
incredibly arrogant! ".
Mélenchon
describes how the officials of Merkel administration welcomed from
the first moment Alexis Tsipras: "Their arrogance was
incredible. They say: 'Europe has always functioned in this way and will
continue in this way'. And when the Greeks came, they said: 'They will
do what the others did'. When they saw a young and polite Greek
(Tsipras) with a nice smile, they said that we will 'swallow' him at
once. But they messed things up. Months later, we are on the same
spot. The polite Greek refuses to back down."
Through the
pages of this "philhellenic notice," as he characterizes
his new book, Mélenchon provides evidence for the wrong tactics of
Berlin and the "arrogance", as he says, of politicians and
technocrats, who simply seek the humiliation of a country.
Mélenchon
notes that "Merkel lied saying that the German citizens work
more than the Greeks, when they go to pension sooner.", and
wonders: "Which European leader has the right to speak this way
for the others? But if I say something against the Germans, I'll be
characterized as inadmissible and German-phobic".
At the same
time, he does not hesitate to refer on the "primary surplus"
and the Grexit scenarios: "They want Greeks to have a primary
surplus of 4.5 units. But who in Europe has a surplus of 4.5 units so
that to demand it from the Greeks by force? Today, 80% of the Greek
debt is in the hands of public institutions. They say we will kick
the Greeks out of euro. Go on! Try it! There is no regulation to
allow this."
The French
politician describes Alexis Tsipras as a "capable negotiator",
stressing that "the Greek government reacted very smartly and
properly," in all the rounds of negotiations with its partners,
until now.
