“For
the first time in 14 years, more Europeans emigrated to Latin
American and Caribbean, new study finds. Migration flows from the
European Union to Latin America now top migrants crossing in the
opposite direction, a new study from International Organization for
Migration revealed. The number of European immigrants reached 181,166
people in 2012 compared to 119,000 who migrated from Latin America.
Migration for Latin Americans has plummeted 68 percent since 2007.”
“Spain
tops the list of EU countries with more migrants to LAC, followed by
Italy, Portugal, France and Germany, the study shows. According to
2013 estimates, a total of 8.5 million international migrants lived
in the Latin American region. Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador have
become the new favorites for European migrants, which have
experienced an increase in EU nationals residing there. By contrast,
this number has dropped in Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela, former EU
hotspots.”
“The
study also found that there are currently more Latin American
migrants living in their own region than in EU countries.”
