Rep. Debbie
Wasserman Schultz, the controversial chairwoman of the Democratic
National Committee, will resign after the convention closes at the
end of this week.
“Going
forward, the best way for me to accomplish those goals is to step
down as Party Chair at the end of this convention,” Schultz
said in a statement. “As Party Chair, this week I will open and
close the Convention and I will address our delegates about the
stakes involved in this election not only for Democrats, but for all
Americans.”
Wasserman
Schultz’s resignation comes after Wikileaks exposed a series of
emails in which Schultz and members of her team disparaged and even
appeared to undermine Bernie Sanders’ campaign, including a
discussion that revolved around questioning his religious faith,
despite the DNC and Wasserman Schultz insisting on their
impartiality.
Sanders had
called for Wasserman Schultz to resign earlier on Sunday, and
Wasserman Schultz had already been removed as a speaker and head of
the Democratic National Convention after a meeting between top
Democratic officials on Saturday night.
So much for her "resignation"...
